Operation Inspiration - Submissions extension Dec. 31, 2011

USA Swimming Foundation - Operation Inspiration.  Please pass on to anyone that might be interested.  Note - deadline is October 28.  Information also on USA Swimming website
------------
A new project will be launched next year in support of the USA Swimming Foundation, internally named “Operation Inspiration.”
In May 2012, the USA Swimming Foundation will release a compilation book of inspiring stories from individuals who have been affected by swimming. Stories will come from National Team athletes, Olympians, Make a Splash heroes, etc. As they are reaching out to those individuals in the swimming community that they are aware of, they are also looking for some of the best stories in the country.
The stories can be funny, sad, heartwarming, life-changing—basically, any story that will pull at the heartstrings of the average reader while focusing on the lifestyles of those in the swimming community.
Within the next few weeks they will host a social media campaign calling for the best stories from across the country via Facebook, twitter, etc. Individuals will be invited to submit their stories to swimstories@usaswimming.org. Select stories will be included in the book, alongside some of America’s favorite athletes.
At this point USA Swimming would like to make sure the swimming community is aware of this opportunity and request that you notify us of any stories that you think will be a good fit for this project—especially those that will touch the hearts of Americans everywhere.
Deadline for submission is Dec. 31, 2011. If selected to participate in the book project, your story will be reviewed by the publisher, edited and sent back to the writer for approval. We are currently looking for stories with a 1000+ word count to be considered. Feel free to forward this invite to participate in “Operation Inspiration” to any teams, coaches, families, etc., as you see fit.
More Information on the Book
  • Proceeds from the book sales will directly benefit the USA Swimming Foundation
  • Release date: Scheduled for May 2012
  • Cost: $14.99 (available in paperback and e-book)
  • Publisher: Farrah Gray Publishing
  • Book Title: Pending
If you have any questions about “Operation Inspiration,” feel free to contact Talia Mark (swimstories@usaswimming.org) or call at 719.425.0409.

Team Suit Policy - On Hold

It appears the team suit that the Recreation team had for Summer is being discontinued and a new suit has been selected for rec. team. For now lets try and wear a red and black suit for our official swim meets. If you want to order a suit from the Rec. website that will work to. The suit policy the club put in place in May will not be enforced this season. Everyone will receive a team t-shirt and cap included with their registration fees. Swimmers are encouraged to wear those two items to the meets. Melissa will meet with suit reps this season to try and work with Jennie to select a suit that will be around for many seasons.  We apologize for any inconvenience.

In the event that the above standards allows the coach to eliminate an entire day at the meet; the compensation for the meet may be adjusted by the number of session on that day at a per session rate based on the full meet compensation rate divided by the total number of sessions scheduled for the meet.

A Tool to Help Your Athlete Focus on Each Race

Have the swimmer after each race:
1. Ask themselves:  What did I do right?
2. Ask themselves:  What could I have done better?
3. Then ask them to visualize, focus and prepare for their next event.

By using these steps this helps a swimmer prepare for each individual event.  If a swimmer has a rough race they can put it behind them.  If the swimmer has a great race they may not focus on the job that still needs to be done and these steps can help them refocus.  Remember as parents to let the athletes work through these steps themselves.  It is important to refrain from answering the questions for them, they just need your encouragement.  It is always best to leave the coaching to the coaches.

Thoughts and reflections taken from Swimming World Magazine.
